This week we speak to talented florist and self-proclaimed botanical sculptress, Clare from 'The Flower Girl Perth' about her entrepreneurial journey, style inspirations and family life...
What inspired you to start your business?
When I was pregnant with my first child 5 years ago I decided style wedding flowers from our garage at home. This was around the same time Instagram was taking off and websites were getting cheaper to build. I organised it all whilst on maternity leave, I registered my name, built the site and waited for the work to come in!
Where do you take your inspiration from?
I’ve always been inspired by the 1960’s/70’s era. I love that hippy, love child, Stevie Nicks, Marilyn Monroe, Bridget Bardot, Rolling Stones kind of vibe! My dream is to live a simple life in a beautiful retro caravan. I think my work sometimes shows signs of my tastes so it’s lucky Boho is in style!
What are the challenges you experience with running a small business and having a young family?
Jeez it’s a 24/7 challenge with running a small biz and young family! So much harder than I thought but so rewarding when I pull it off. My kids toys are constantly tripping me up in my home garage, there is never a quiet time to focus on emails and quotes and I have to get up very early when everyone is asleep to do these bits. Brides often request consultations during out of hours and I accommodate but my family chaos is in the background and that can make for some awkward moments.
Do you have a colour theme or style that you feel will be popular in 2018?
Blush and burgundy has certainly had its day in my opinion. I predict grey and white, dried tropical leaves and native wildflower textures. Very understated and textured.
And finally what else are you hoping to achieve in 2018?
I am absolutely desperate to move my operation into a workshop/studio by the end of 2018. The universe has been listening to me begging for this for a while so I reckon it will happen!!
