We've had a lot of people asking questions recently to get to know Tash a bit more. With so many amazing collections coming out, it's easy to understand why we're curious to know about the woman behind it all. So we sat Tash down from an interview and asked her all the things her fans wanted to know.
- What got you into fashion?
I have always loved fashion from a young age. My mum dressed me in the best of everything in the 70’s, whether that was in a Velvet Dress, a stunning cape and beanie set or a red coat and flares, she always made sure I looked amazing. I have always enjoyed fashion from the era and would love to wear and explore new ideas, even if I didn’t always pull them off.
When I approached year 10 and had to do work experience I worked at a Fashion Agency, studying art; and realised that I liked the industry. I then went to study Fashion at Perth TAFE (which is still one of the best Fashion courses or diplomas in Perth, today.)
- What inspires you?
I am inspired daily by everything around me. Music is a huge part of my life, as well as travelling, books and fashion magazines. My greatest inspiration is vintage items!
I LOVE vintage shopping; the thrill of finding so many amazing styles, textiles and odds and end. My other huge inspiration is the 70’s, which I am obsessed with and still think that it is one of the best decades for style – meaning I always draw inspiration from it when designing every collection.
- What started House of S K Y E ?
The label was created after I had finished a partnership with a women’s fashion accessories and clothing business. I had seen a missed opportunity in WA of Bohemian Fashion and started the label in April 2014.
- What is the relevance of the name Skye?
The label name was created as the “House of” because I always wanted to create a label that could grow and develop into other collections besides clothing (jewellery, homewares etc) – I wanted something that wouldn’t limit the possibilities I could reach or try out. And the name ‘SKYE’ was the name I was going to call my daughter if I was to ever have children, and since my business is now my baby, the name S K Y E became the perfect label name. And so, House of S K Y E was created.
- Why Boho?
Bohemian for me is a way of life. I love that you can be so colourful and mix vintage with bohemian and look effortless. Coming from Australia and the climate that we have and the lifestyle that we live. Bohemian is such an easy and great way to dress whether you’re in Fashion or a mum who runs around, it’s such a great fashion style to wear and love – especially coming from Australia and the climate we have.
- What do you love about Western Australia?
I am very passionate and proud of being from Western Australia. I feel extremely blessed to be part of the Australian Fashion Industry and to be able sell outside of the country too. I love that WA has so many amazing places to visit and that each collection has allowed us to travel within WA and use its magnificent backdrops that we often take for granted. I always tell everyone I meet that you must visit WA and Australia, as there is nothing else quite like it.
- What does a typical day look like for you?
A typically day for me is a 5.30am wake up to exercise at the gym or attend Pilates, a 7am walk with my dog Tuco before an 8am breakfast and then hitting the office for 9am. From there, my morning is so busy and it varies from day to day depending which staff I have in the office and which task is our current priority. A quick lunch at 1pm and then I work endlessly until 5pm. I will be selling, designing and creating all day, so I try to stop working exactly at 5pm every day; some time has to be allocated to me and my Husband. 6pm to 6.30pm cook and eat dinner. 7ish I try and watch one of my favourite shows or read and go to bed by 9.30pm every night, before I wake up and do it all again the next day. I love my routine and I love working on my brand.
- What is your dream for this brand?
My dream for the brand is to keep growing organically and for me, as a designer, to grow every year and design fabulous collections that our customers will love and cherish for years to come. My other big dream, which we have now put into place, is that the label is fully sustainable. We have made changes over the last year but 2020 sees us go completely plastic free! Our fabrics will also become 100% echo friendly later in the year.
- What is your favourite item from your latest collection?
From our next upcoming Collection Wilde Love I have actually a few favourites, but if I had to choose three pieces they would be:
- The Wilde Love Wrap Dress - I love wrap dresses and the ¾ belle sleeves are just stunning. I feel amazing wearing this and you always have a good day when you’re feeling confident.
- The Ziggy Gypsy Dress – as I love the original 70’s Gypsy Dress and I always try to have one in a collection. This is so easy to wear and dress up or down for a more casual look.
- Lastly I am obsessed with jackets and coats and even though my fav Easy Rider Jacket is an all time favourite, the new Led Zeppelin Velvet Jacket is a killer piece and the Embroidery is everything!
